FEELING GUILT

THIS LITTLE PIGGY BELONGS TO THE DEVIL (pg .131)

I sit on the edge of my bed studying my hands while Brenda changes for the night. The skin sags and puckers between the fingers. They are old man hands but I can’t remember when they got there. There is a gap in my life from forty to sixty. On one side of the canyon I look and feel and behave as I always have; on the other side…this side…I have sagging, crinkly skin. I look like an old man but I did not get here in degrees. It didn’t creep up on me. I just woke up this way, the owner of new and different aches and pains and a medicine cabinet full of pills meant to control them.

From my perch on my side of the mattress, I hear Brenda in the bathroom.

“Why did you mention the divorce?”

“He hasn’t really talked to me since the...since the birthday party. I thought I forced him into the divorce. I thought he blamed me for their deaths.”

Brenda comes back into the bedroom.

“Do you blame yourself?”

Maybe I shouldn’t answer.

“Yes.”

“You have spent your life saying two things: It will be alright or I’ll fix this. Clark is right. Whatever Plan B you think fits this situation...this time you can’t fix it and it won’t be alright.”

She climbs into bed, shuts the light and settles under the covers. I sit there staring out the window.

But I can fix this.

I can make it better.

George and I can make things right.

This Little Piggy Belongs to the Devil is an apocalyptic fall from grace, psychologically speaking. It is a fast-paced, concise and passionate point of view account presented in blunt, brutal, vulgar, irreverent, glib, off-the-cuff and occasionally comical language.  This Little Piggy is designed to appeal to the adult reader interested in cerebral, psychological thrillers.  It's first person presentation allows the reader to experience events from the singular aspect of the storyteller.  The book is sure to engage fans of the genre.

This Little Piggy... Synopsis and Bio

Colin and Connor’s grandfather could not make it to their funeral. Breakdowns come with a price. After his release from the Happy Hotel for Naked Old Men he worked hard at healing, at facing the terrible loss he and his family suffered. At moving on. That was the goal. Head doctors always have goals and Grandpa was doing well...until one unexpected slip, an accident really, sent him spiraling in an entirely different, decidedly darker direction. He became obsessed with "making things right", with fixing things. Somehow he understood that only he could do that. Only he could make things right. And the cost didn’t matter.

Vincent Palazzo lives and works in the Adirondack Mountains.  This Little Piggy Belongs to the Devil is his first novel.

"I began writing This Little Piggy... after a life-shattering tragedy.  On June 26th, 2010 a catastrophic fire in Fort Edward, NY claimed the lives of six children.  Two were my grandkids Hope & Mackenzie.  Writing became a way of focusing my head.  Maybe even keeping me sane.  In the beginning, it did not matter what I wrote.  Just sitting at the computer, hammering away, was what I seemed to need.  Eventually, I found an old story idea (that I wrote after the shooting at an Amish schoolhouse) and that idea took flight and became this novel..."
